Tree farming is a combination of agriculture, forestry and horticulture and is very labour intensive. It may come as a surprise that running a tree farm is an all-year-round job, its also very labour demanding while accurately executing growing techniques at certain times of the year.
In the winter months, we spend our time pruning and shaping every tree.
Then springtime we are busy preparing the ground for planting and then applying fertiliser.
By early summer are these months are crucial for growing and involve timely applications for a successful crop. This can be anything from bud picking, leader control and further shaping.
August is a time for marking what's ready for harvest.
As December is looming were still shaping trees ready for sale.
What about using herbicides? We now no longer use herbicides to control weeds on our plantation. Our Shropshire sheep take care of all this and allows us to work in a safer environment, reduce damage to soils and impact on the environment. You may see our sheep mowing our weeds and are very friendly!
It takes around 7 to 8 years from the sapling and planted into the soil to grow a 6 ft tree! Yes takes quite some time. What's interesting is the sustainability of real Christmas trees. For every one harvested another 2 are replanted the following year. This provides a continuous cycle and while absorbing carbon and other emissions.
We grow the most popular species including Noble and Nordman Fir. We also introduced new species such as Fraser fir which you may find growing a, as very small trees and will be ready in the coming years.
This refers to using organic methods to growing a crop while benefiting the environment. We have now stopped the use of herbicides and use a special breed of sheep called Shropshire that mow everything around our plantation.
